How Richmonders Observe Memorial Day

by CiCi

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – Memorial Day, observed on the fourth Monday in May, is dedicated to honoring every person who lost their life in the military. As a federal holiday, many people have the day off work, and children are out of school.

“It’s not a holiday; it’s a day to remember and honor,” emphasized Governor Glenn Youngkin.

Richmond residents marked the day in various ways, some spending time outdoors while others engaged in meaningful activities.

Honoring History and Enjoying Nature

Despite the rainy forecast, many flocked to Brown’s Island to enjoy the day.

“We came down to just take a look and see the city and hopefully some history,” said Erica Edwards, visiting from Seattle.

Several visitors also made their way to the Virginia War Memorial before heading to the waterfront.

“I have a great amount of respect for troops and people who served, so on Memorial Day, being able to soak that all in really means something, especially knowing that my brother is in the army and I know other people who also served,” shared Martin Enyinnaya, a Richmond resident.

The overcast weather provided a pleasant respite from the recent heatwave.

“It was so hot the last couple of days, so I am loving this weather,” Edwards noted.

Giving Back to the Community

In the spirit of service, some Richmonders found ways to give back.

“I can’t think of a better way to serve your community than to donate blood and save a life here in the Richmond area,” said Jonathan McNamara of The American Red Cross.

Carol Seely, a regular blood donor, shared her perspective on contributing during Memorial Day.

“It makes me feel good, like I’m doing something, helping others, and it’s just time,” Seely said.

Reflection and Respect

Memorial Day in Richmond was marked by both reflection and community spirit, as residents honored the sacrifices of military personnel and found personal ways to contribute to the well-being of their community.
